Parametric Modeling Innovates Bridge Design

whitePaper | January 6, 2020

Bridge design is no simple matter. While traditional 3D modeling software is useful for buildings, these structures don’t present the same challenges that bridge design does. Jalpesh Patel, Senior Technical Consultant with Allplan explains why: Buildings are mainly linear, vertical structures with minimal to no obstruction. Bridges, on the other hand, are non-linear, horizontal structures that must weave through obstacles, existing structures, and multiple right-ofway restrictions.

Build-to-Rent: Helping the UK Build Back Better

whitePaper | June 19, 2022

The private rental market is playing an increasingly vital role in meeting the nation’s housing needs. Over four million households currently rent their homes, which is doublethe two million who rented at the turn of the century.1 In London alone, it is predicted that by 2025 just under 40% of households in the capital will be renting.2 The Montague Report, which was published by the Government in 2012, considered how to encourage investment into the private rented sector, and recognised the opportunity for the rental market to accelerate the delivery of homes, whilst setting the standards for accommodation, and seeking to attract institutional investment into the market.

Technical Design Requirements for Alberta Infrastructure Facilities

whitePaper | August 2, 2022

The purpose of the Technical Design Requirements for Alberta Infrastructure Facilities (TDR) document is to provide architects, engineers, contractors, client groups, facility administrators and operators involved in designing and building facilities with a comprehensive set of requirements. The requirements have been developed by Alberta Infrastructure Technical Services and Procurement Branch by consolidating best practices information, from the position of knowledgeable owner, as well as national and international subject matter experts. They are based on components and systems which have proven to be reliable and efficient, to meet the needs of the users, and to have acceptable life cycle costs. The requirements are intended as a minimum for planning new facilities and renovating and operating existing facilities. Innovative designs, products, systems and technology are encouraged after thorough evaluation of potential benefits and risks, value analysis and life cycle cost. Early and regular involvement by Technical Services staff is recommended when proposing alternatives.

Understanding and Choosing Metrics for Building Performance Standards

whitePaper | July 21, 2022

President Biden has called for net-zero emissions, economy-wide, by 2050. Accomplishing this will require increasing efficiency, vastly increasing renewable energy capacity, and transitioning from fossil fuels to clean electricity. Buildings have a critical role to play in achieving each of these objectives. This paper proposes a framework for determining which metrics are best suited for policies to move existing commercial and multifamily buildings forward on the path toward zero carbon emissions. Choosing the right metrics is necessary for effective policies, but it is not sufficient to achieving a just and inclusive energy transition. Building performance policies — in conjunction with other complementary policies — must bring the benefits of improved performance to those living in affordable housing andhistorically underserved communities, and at the same time ensure that the cost of compliance does not create new burdens. Jurisdictions must consider the impact of policy decisions on equitable outcomes, particularly with respect to establishing performance levels, options for compliance, and penalties for non-compliance.
