Exploring the robotics revolution

March 18, 2018

When science fiction writer Isaac Asimov wrote about the three laws of robotics in his book Runaround in 1942, little did he know they would one day become a reality for a world filled with robots. From automated manufacturing plants, medical and pharmaceutical applications to military, agricultural and automotive systems, robots are everywhere in our modern world.

Top 6 Tips for Faster Smarter Civil Engineering Calculation Sheets

whitePaper | October 17, 2022

Engineering calculations are at the heart of civil engineering design. The calculation sheets that accompany a project can provide evidence of the design competency and that the specifications are met. Common building calculations are formalized in design guides, such as Eurocodes, AASHTO, IBC etc. The equations tend to be mathematically simple – only needing basic arithmetic operations on the design parameters – but they still require engineering experience to determine the which, why, and when.

Modern Methods Of Construction 2023

whitePaper | March 14, 2023

MMC is ultimately about improving efficiency and productivity in both design and in construction. It is widely known that construction has a substantial productivity gap compared to many other sectors and MMC has been suggested as one of the methods to tackle this challenge. Although described as a “product-led” type of construction, MMC is also about developing the manufacturing processes and how these processes are executed.

Understanding and Choosing Metrics for Building Performance Standards

whitePaper | July 21, 2022

President Biden has called for net-zero emissions, economy-wide, by 2050. Accomplishing this will require increasing efficiency, vastly increasing renewable energy capacity, and transitioning from fossil fuels to clean electricity. Buildings have a critical role to play in achieving each of these objectives. This paper proposes a framework for determining which metrics are best suited for policies to move existing commercial and multifamily buildings forward on the path toward zero carbon emissions. Choosing the right metrics is necessary for effective policies, but it is not sufficient to achieving a just and inclusive energy transition. Building performance policies — in conjunction with other complementary policies — must bring the benefits of improved performance to those living in affordable housing andhistorically underserved communities, and at the same time ensure that the cost of compliance does not create new burdens. Jurisdictions must consider the impact of policy decisions on equitable outcomes, particularly with respect to establishing performance levels, options for compliance, and penalties for non-compliance.
