Unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, have been used by militaries around the globe for a number of years and are now a key technology for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations. Their role is continually expanding. Recently, interest in lighter-than-air vehicles and commercial and hobbyist drones has grown significantly, with applications in cargo and parcel delivery, internet provision in remote areas, emergency aid, industrial asset monitoring (pipelines) and many more. Drones are a microcosm of the Internet of Things (IoT).
