By Rich Black Engineering Project Manager Lutron Electronics Company, Inc.

In 1991, Lutron® identified the need for a completely retrofit light control system (LCS). The retrofit requirement drove the communications to be RF-based. Lutron knew that light control in a home or business was operationally essential, therefore ultimate reliability was vital. These systems can never stop working; in fact, they can’t even tolerate latency issues. The required performance standard for a light control system is much higher than for many other systems. The company began analyzing the needs in the global marketplace, investigating possible communication topologies, observing and predicting changes and trends in RF technology and usage, and working through the various frequency bands and their regulatory requirements.

AI Requires Tailored DRAM Solutions

whitePaper | April 6, 2020

For over 30 years, DRAM has continuously adapted to the needs of each new wave of hardware spanning PCs, game consoles, mobile phones and cloud servers. AI/ML may be the biggest challenge yet. Artificial intelligence is the study and application of providing hardware and software that attempt to emulate human intelligence. Therefore, as human beings adapt to different tasks, AI must adapt. Indeed, if AI is to scale to the diversity of human tasks, it will not be via a single, monolithic solution. For every task a human can perform, AI must adapt through a unique combination of hardware and software components.

MAKING CONCRETE A MORE SUSTAINABLE BUILDING MATERIAL

whitePaper | November 11, 2022

Concrete is an outstanding building material. It is widely available, economical, hard and durable like stone, and easy to work with – all attractive properties for the construction industry. However, concrete also has its disadvantages. The cement contained in concrete consumes a lot of energy during its production process and emits large amounts of CO2. This, combined with the enormous demand for concrete and the simultaneous low recycling rate, makes concrete less-than-friendly for the environment.

Current Issues in Procurement of Architectural, Engineering, and Construction Management Services

whitePaper | February 19, 2020

Government Code Sections 4525 define a qualifications-based selection process where public entities may consider the price of proposed services in the procurement. This process was previously a three-step process starting with advertising for statements of qualifications, then developing a short list, and then requesting proposals from the short list to include resumes, comments on the contract, and price considerations if relevant; but is now often a four-step process, with the last step of negotiating sequentially with the most qualified firms.
