The continued growth and success of cities is one of the great triumphs of modern civilization. Cities are home to the majority of the world’s population and generate more than 80% of GDP. Rapid urbanization has also brought about new challenges as cities have struggled with congestion, pollution, increased carbon emissions, inequity and exposure to natural disasters such as floods and storms. The COVID-19 pandemic and climate change have further intensified these issues. The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development sets out the goal of “building inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and communities”. Whereas these goals may be universally accepted, the path to get there is not as clear. Innovation and empowerment of digital technology are critical to transforming our cities. Policy support and institutional change are also essential.

The built environment needs continuous adaptation to global population changes, the adverse effects of climate change, and evolving occupant requirements. To meet these evolving challenges, architects and engineers require access to highfidelity design simulation tools to accurately predict complex behavior in buildings and cities. SimScale enables architects and engineers to integrate physics-based simulation into their entire design workflow starting from the earliest stages where critical design decisions are made. Rapid assessments of the microclimate impacts on design for example, are now possible using the simple and intuitive workflow in SimScale

he digital planning, which can now be found in architecture and design offices, at general contractors or via prefabrication, bricklaying robots and GPS-based excavators already on the building site, is characterized by Building Information Modeling (BIM). Yet, BIM is only really an efficient and commercial option if it is paired with the integrated working method.

COBOD is a globally leading company within the 3D construction printing segment. One of a few companies in this segment that has been making headlinesin the press for the commercial projects completed by the many users of its 3D construction printers around the world. Among others, they have completed the first 3D printed building in Europe, The BOD, in 2017 and Europe’s first two- and three-story buildings when most still thought it would be impossible to 3D print multi-story houses.

State governments across the US need to integrate their planning and development of public infrastructure if they are to deploy funds from the new Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) effectively, future-proof their communities, and maximize the value of the capital they employ. The case for integration is strong from both a financial and a social perspective, with the potential to help the country meet a number of infrastructure-related challenges.
