Phone-A-Drone Concept Aims to Simplify Inspection

A group of Arizona State graduate students invented a drone company called Phone-A-Drone as part of a class project, and are now considering it for a future enterprise. According to an article in The State Press, the service would allow construction workers to call Phone-A-Drone to inspect work sites for them and ensure the safety of the buildings. Additionally, the drone used for inspecting would utilize unique technology configured by the students. For example, Phone-A-Drone’s technology allows its drone to detect surroundings using light detection and ranging (LIDAR). LIDAR is a remote sensing method that uses light in the form of a pulsated laser to measure ranges to the Earth, according to State Press. With LIDAR, the drone could also be used in mining applications where it is difficult to safely navigate. The students also added a visual positioning system to the drone-an augmented reality system that estimates location and orientation with respect to the surrounding environment.

Rio Grande Pacific Corporation Announces Engineering and Construction Teams for Uinta Basin Railway Project

Rio Grande Pacific Corporation through its Rio Grande Pacific Group portfolio company Basin Railway Constructors, LLC (“BRC”) announced today it has selected the engineering and construction firms for the final engineering and construction of the Uinta Basin Railway, the 85-mile-long common-carrier railway that will provide the first-ever common-carrier railway service to northeastern Utah’s Uinta Basin region. Construction and operation of the Uinta Basin Railway project was authorized by the U.S. Surface Transportation Board on December 15, 2021. The railway will serve mineral, energy, agricultural, construction, and manufacturing industries in the Uinta Basin. The railway project was initiated by the Seven County Infrastructure Coalition, a political subdivision of the State of Utah, in 2018. The Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation is an equity partner in the railway. Engineering and Construction firms that were selected are: AECOM will deliver final design of the railway exclusive of it tunnels. AECOM is the No. 1 engineering firm worldwide (in terms of revenue) per Engineering News-Record (ENR). Skanska-WW Clyde Joint Venture will deliver construction of the railway exclusive of its tunnels. Skanska is the No. 5 construction firm worldwide per ENR. UL Partners with InSite to Help Advance Building Intelligence, Technology Integration and Performance
