Engineering camp strives to educate, excite students about STEM

Instead of taking a break from school for the summer, 30 students put their brains to the test at the BCPS Elementary Engineering Camp last week. Students made use of the newly opened Mechatronics buildings on the campus of Western Piedmont Community College.
The camp gives students the opportunity to dig into what real-life chemical, product, civil and electrical engineers get to do in their professions, said Christie McMahon, camp director and principal at W.A. Young Elementary School.
With the help of different chemical agents, agents were able to create their own soap and smile. They also were able to experience the engineering design process from start to finish.
