As the number of people residing in already-established cities and new projects drives up demand for new buildings, architects and builders around the world are increasingly focusing on modular construction over the traditional permanent structure in an effort to cut down on construction time and speed up the commercialisation of their projects. The construction industry is one of the nation’s (and world’s) largest industries. In 2021, construction accounted for over 4.1 percent of the US gross domestic product*. That ranks ahead of agriculture, mining, transportation, arts and entertainment, and even national defense spending! Despite more than 90 percent of US general contractors listing labor shortages as a concern, women make up only 10.3 percent of those working in the built environment – and that number shrinks to just 2-4 percent when looking at several of the skilled trades.
