The construction industry is one of the nation’s (and world’s) largest industries. In 2021, construction accounted for over 4.1 percent of the US gross domestic product*. That ranks ahead of agriculture, mining, transportation, arts and entertainment, and even national defense spending! Despite more than 90 percent of US general contractors listing labor shortages as a concern, women make up only 10.3 percent of those working in the built environment – and that number shrinks to just 2-4 percent when looking at several of the skilled trades.
