Baby makes history after world's first robotic womb transplant

April 10, 2019 / Sarah Knapton

He might look like any other baby, but this little boy is the first in the world to be born from the donated womb of  their grandmother, recovered thanks to a new procedure using a robot. Weighing in at just over 6lbs, the infant was delivered by caesarean section on Monday and is said to be fit and healthy.
Just five years ago such an operation would never have been possible. But in 2014 surgeons in Sweden led by Mats Brannstrom, successfully transplanted a donor womb into a 36-year-old mother who gave birth to a baby boy. Since then there have been 14 births globally from womb transplants, excluding the latest success.
