Engineered miniature kidneys come of age

ScienceDaily | February 11, 2019

In recent years, researchers have created mini-organs known as organoids in the culture dish that contains many of the cell types and complex microarchitectures found in human organs, such as the kidney, liver, intestine, and even the brain. However, most organoids grown in vitro lack the vasculature required to provide oxygen and nutrients, remove metabolic waste, and facilitate communication between different cell types that drive their maturation into truly functional tissue building blocks.
For kidney organoids, this shortcoming prevents researchers from emulating key kidney functions in vitro, including blood filtration, reabsorption, and urine production. Creating robustly vascularized kidney organoids could enable better modeling of kidney diseases, enhance renal drug toxicity testing and, ultimately, lead to new building blocks for renal replacement therapies.

Vinci Wins Contract to Build and Maintain Femern Tunnel's Electromechanical Infrastructure

VINCI | May 31, 2022

VINCI has just signed a contract to upgrade the Femern tunnel with electromechanical installations through its subsidiary Cobra IS. The deal is worth more than DKK 4 billion (€535 million). Over the next six years, it will primarily focus on ventilation, lighting, and safety systems, as well as electromechanical system maintenance in the tunnel's five tubes (two for highway road, two for high-speed rail, and one for service gallery). Cobra IS has suggested options that are good for the environment and use less energy, such as the ability to run tunnel operations entirely on renewable energy. The Femern, the world's longest road and rail tunnel, is being built 40 meters beneath the Baltic Sea's surface. In the year 2020, work on the project will begin. It will connect Denmark and Germany in seven minutes by train and ten minutes by car after it is completed in 2029. In addition, the main civil works design and build contract for the Femern tunnel has been awarded to VINCI Construction and its partners. In this context, work on the precast plant that will build the tunnel's immersed portions is currently underway. Cobra IS is also working on electromechanical equipment for several significant infrastructure projects in Scandinavia, including the Stockholm bypass, the northern and southern extensions of the Stockholm metro, and the Tingstad tunnel in Gothenburg. Cobra IS was awarded the contract to develop electrical infrastructure along 23 kilometers of highway in Norway, including 15 kilometers of tunnels, last year.
