Construction considered essential in many US regions

KHL Group | March 20, 2020

Construction in the US amid coronavirus precautions continues for now in most places and could indefinitely, if industry officials can persuade government to include various aspects of the industry among other essential business. Trade associations, such as the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), the Association for Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) and Equipment Dealers Association (EDA) are all advocating for various facets of construction to be exempt from existing and potential public health policies that would require work stoppages resulting in economic hardship for workers as well as numerous other negative consequences to the general economy.  On 18 March, AGC joined a host of other business groups in calling on Congress to enact a number of tax-related measures to safeguard companies, regardless of size, during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Hilti and Bentley Make It Easier for Construction Engineers to Design Workflow with Software Integration

Hilti | July 14, 2022

Hilti North America, a global leader providing innovative tools, technology, software, and services to the commercial construction industry has streamlined the base plate design workflow for PROFIS Engineering Suite users by integrating the cloud-based software with Bentley's RAM Structural System. The agreement with Bentley Systems, the infrastructure engineering software company, gives structural engineers and designers the ability to transfer designs quicker and more accurately between the two programs. PROFIS Engineering Suite, a user-friendly, cloud-based application helps handle the calculations and analysis of the different elements of a steel-to-concrete connection, including base plate and anchors, with easier iteration and thorough documentation. Now, RAM Structural System and PROFIS Engineering work together to streamline the workflow and help simplify the base plate anchor design process. Users can leverage the integration of RAM Structural System with the design power of PROFIS Engineering to easily import, design, and export anchor and base plate designs, while ensuring accuracy and maximum productivity. PROFIS Engineering can receive all the information needed to the baseplate and connection design in a few short clicks, helping reduce the need for manual data transfer. This method will save up to one hour per design by optimizing your workflow. "Our customers have requested integrations between their structural analysis software and PROFIS Engineering to increase user productivity while ensuring accuracy of their design, We are eager to align with an organization like Bentley that shares our values in providing solutions that move the industry forward. Integrated with RAM Structural System to deliver a seamless experience further enables our customers to simplify the entire anchor design process from start to finish, while delivering considerable time savings for each design. This is yet another example of Hilti listening to our users and providing additional value that benefits the customer's bottom line." -David Crawford, director of technical marketing and application solutions at Hilti North America. At Bentley, we are always looking for ways to increase our users' engineering productivity and accuracy, said Josh Taylor, senior director of structural product management at Bentley Systems. We are excited to give our RAM Structural System users the additional benefit of a seamless interface with Hilti PROFIS Engineering to improve accuracy and save time for their structural steel-to-concrete connection designs. Hilti customers can learn the benefits of using the RAM Structural System plugin for PROFIS Engineering by registering for the webinar Enhancing Design Productivity Through Software Integration. Vinci Wins Contract to Build and Maintain Femern Tunnel's Electromechanical Infrastructure

VINCI | May 31, 2022

VINCI has just signed a contract to upgrade the Femern tunnel with electromechanical installations through its subsidiary Cobra IS. The deal is worth more than DKK 4 billion (€535 million). Over the next six years, it will primarily focus on ventilation, lighting, and safety systems, as well as electromechanical system maintenance in the tunnel's five tubes (two for highway road, two for high-speed rail, and one for service gallery). Cobra IS has suggested options that are good for the environment and use less energy, such as the ability to run tunnel operations entirely on renewable energy. The Femern, the world's longest road and rail tunnel, is being built 40 meters beneath the Baltic Sea's surface. In the year 2020, work on the project will begin. It will connect Denmark and Germany in seven minutes by train and ten minutes by car after it is completed in 2029. In addition, the main civil works design and build contract for the Femern tunnel has been awarded to VINCI Construction and its partners. In this context, work on the precast plant that will build the tunnel's immersed portions is currently underway. Cobra IS is also working on electromechanical equipment for several significant infrastructure projects in Scandinavia, including the Stockholm bypass, the northern and southern extensions of the Stockholm metro, and the Tingstad tunnel in Gothenburg. Cobra IS was awarded the contract to develop electrical infrastructure along 23 kilometers of highway in Norway, including 15 kilometers of tunnels, last year.

Billd Announces Partnership with ConstructConnect to Significantly Strengthen Bid Strategies for Trade Contractors

ConstructConnect | June 29, 2022

Billd, the leading provider of material financing and pay app advancement for commercial trade contractors, today announced a partnership with ConstructConnect, a portfolio of software and services that combines a builders network, robust project data, and takeoff tools for construction professionals. This partnership will enable subcontractors using ConstructConnect to more easily secure approval on financing for projects. Combined, these services increase bid confidence and competitiveness, allowing trade contractors to take on more projects and grow their businesses. With this partnership, Billd's premier financing offerings are now readily available to trade contractors as they assess and bid on new projects. This allows trade contractors to plan their financial strategy for each project, reducing the risk of negative cash flow, which can be disruptive once a project reaches execution. By providing access to upfront cash solutions for materials, approved ConstructConnect customers will be able to lock in crucial materials as soon as projects are won, mitigating financial risk from unpredictable market fluctuations in cost and project delays from increased lead times. "Subcontractors have long struggled to gain access to working capital to maintain and grow business through traditional financial institutions, Our partnership with Billd informs subcontractors about the opportunity to secure material and labor payment financing while they wait for payment on work already completed. This should better position companies that require access to working capital to succeed and grow their businesses." -Jon Kost, Chief Strategy Officer of ConstructConnect. Billd has taken major strides in the construction industry to provide financing terms that align with payment cycles. Trade contractors and suppliers are typically the last to get paid, waiting on average over 83 days. A recent US market report from Billd that surveyed nearly 800 contractors found that 66% of contractors pay for materials and 82% pay for labor before receiving payment for their work. Billd works to help alleviate this financial burden through cash flow solutions that allow trade contractors to take on and execute more projects. "The lack of access to finance resources has shortchanged trade contractors for decades, causing limitations on their ability to maintain healthy cash flow, We're thrilled to bring financial options to more contractors through ConstructConnect's pre-construction portfolio. Together we will increase bidding confidence and support execution." -Chris Doyle, CEO of Billd. About Billd- Billd was started by Christopher Doyle and Jesse Weissburg, industry veterans in both construction and finance. Chris and Jesse were inspired to launch Billd to bring the financial power of Wall Street to the construction jobsite, allowing contractors to bypass project hurdles with access to upfront funds while enabling suppliers to sell more materials with less risk. For contractors who usually aren't paid until more than 83 days from purchasing materials, Billd provides 120-day terms so they can stabilize cash flow and more effectively grow their businesses. With a deep understanding of the construction industry, Billd knows traditional credit metrics are poor predictors for risk in this vertical segment and has built a variety of industry-specific proprietary analytic tools to better assess risk in the construction industry. About ConstructConnect- ConstructConnect is a leading provider of commercial construction information and technology solutions and is committed to transforming the way the construction industry does business by providing its customers the tools, information, and connections needed to drive their success.
