Anyone who has walked downtown in a large city and looked up has seen them - large cranes. Tower cranes are fixed to the ground on a concrete slab and sometimes attached to the sides of structures as well. Tower cranes often give the best combination of height and lifting capacity and are used in the construction of tall buildings. The base is then attached to the mast which gives the crane its height.

Trimble’s SiteVision Turns Your Phone Into an Augmented Reality BIM Coordination Machine

Article | April 23, 2020

There are a handful of pretty cool accessories for your smartphone that can be very useful to those of us in the construction industry, like thermal imaging cameras, in-wall imagers, and inspection cameras. None of those, however, help with BIM coordination, unlike a system that I just found from construction software giant, Trimble. Many different systems have been created in recent years to harness the power of augmented reality on the jobsite, with BIM the core focus of many of those solutions, but this system from Trimble is a bit different than all of them. Using an AR enabled smartphone, Trimble SiteVision combines hardware and software to virtually project BIM models onto the jobsite you’re standing in.

Infrastructure Policy Watch: measuring India's progress on SDGs, Canada consults on infrastructure priorities

Article | June 15, 2021

The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI), an Indian government policy commission, has published its SDG India Index and Dashboard 2020-21 report on progress against the UN Sustainable Development Goals at the state level in India, its third annual report. The main theme of this year’s report is ‘partnerships’, with NITI aiming to highlight the pace that can be achieved by working together in pursuit of the goals, as well as shine a light on the quiet but effective partnerships working away in the background. As part of this, the report sets out actions that have been taken across the 11 areas of the collaborative advantage framework to drive forward progress on SDG indicators. In the accompanying index, all Indian states and union territories are scored and ranked on each SDG, alongside progress over the year.

Why infrastructure policies need engineers' 'bigger picture' view

Article | July 6, 2021

One way or another, we all work on infrastructure; whether design, construction, operation or maintenance. We solve problems and make things work – often without the public realising the complexity of our task. We sit in the background and don’t make waves. We are good at the technical challenges, but how often do we take a step back and think about how our work or project fits into the ambitions of wider society? Who is commissioning it? Why are they commissioning it? What are the political drivers? What do they want the outcome to be? What has changed since we started work on it? This sort of questioning will help us deliver better projects, as we see the bigger picture, beyond our technical solutions. With so much of our infrastructure delivered through public bodies, it is important that civil engineers understand, and give professional advice to, the political process that drives infrastructure investment for our communities.
