The fate of human society depends on a sustainable future. Engineers must be part of the solution, writes Graham Davies. Can our society last in its current form for 10,000 years? One thousand years? When asked this question, most people answer no to even 100 years. People feel intuitively that our lifestyles are not sustainable.

On Engineering in Crisis: Choosing Gratitude

Article | April 29, 2020

It is important to find a balance right now and keep yourself surrounded by people you love, your family and friends. Stress is bound to happen during these extraordinary times. Meditation and connecting with yourself would help reduce any anxiety or panic that the mind creates. I am grateful that I am safe and healthy surrounded with my family, and I am thankful for having the gifts of life. It is up to us, to be grateful or be stressed. I treat this time as a luxury, time that I would have never gotten in my hustling life. I am trying to tick all the items in my to-do checklist that I have been postponing due to lack of time.

Remote work: Engineering’s perspective on humanizing the remote work experience

Article | April 24, 2020

At GitHub, working remotely has been in our DNA from the start. With over 80% of our engineers working remotely before COVID-19, the team has established some amazing best practices that foster a strong collaborative environment, inspire creativity, and a bit of levity with the ultimate goal of building trust within teams. What’s it like for GitHub engineers to work remotely?

How can we design better for Buildability?

Article | July 28, 2021

The use of highly sophisticated building models – as a result of BIM – has transformed how we design the built environment. However, although the digital models used by architects and engineers during design enable impressive visualization and documentation of the designer’s intent, the data and considerations required to construct it are often considered separately. We typically use the design model to communicate the final state of the project – not how it is constructed, even though such considerations result in a more accurate estimate on both project time and cost. Of course, different flavors of BIM tools exist that do consider such topics during manufacturing and construction, but how often do we truly consider the impact of the construction process as part of making the right initial design decisions?

Trimble’s SiteVision Turns Your Phone Into an Augmented Reality BIM Coordination Machine

Article | April 23, 2020

There are a handful of pretty cool accessories for your smartphone that can be very useful to those of us in the construction industry, like thermal imaging cameras, in-wall imagers, and inspection cameras. None of those, however, help with BIM coordination, unlike a system that I just found from construction software giant, Trimble. Many different systems have been created in recent years to harness the power of augmented reality on the jobsite, with BIM the core focus of many of those solutions, but this system from Trimble is a bit different than all of them. Using an AR enabled smartphone, Trimble SiteVision combines hardware and software to virtually project BIM models onto the jobsite you’re standing in.
