As the demand for construction work has steadily grown, so too has the demand for skilled laborers to complete the work.  After years of industry talk about needing to fill the gap, it’s become apparent that wage increases will be a way to drive more interest to those looking for work. According to a report conducted by Zillow Research, year over year wage increases in the construction sector have far outpaced the national average for the private sector.

How can we design better for Buildability?

Article | July 28, 2021

The use of highly sophisticated building models – as a result of BIM – has transformed how we design the built environment. However, although the digital models used by architects and engineers during design enable impressive visualization and documentation of the designer’s intent, the data and considerations required to construct it are often considered separately. We typically use the design model to communicate the final state of the project – not how it is constructed, even though such considerations result in a more accurate estimate on both project time and cost. Of course, different flavors of BIM tools exist that do consider such topics during manufacturing and construction, but how often do we truly consider the impact of the construction process as part of making the right initial design decisions?

The Efficiency of BIM for Bridges

Article | July 14, 2021

When the Tamina Bridge in the Swiss Alps was first proposed, the engineers were uncertain how they would create a bridge that spanned two different heights at each end of the valley, at a height of 220m (772 feet) above ground. Yet despite these challenges, the bridge was completed a year ahead of schedule in just four years – mainly due to the efficiencies that Building Information Modelling (BIM) provided. While the name may inadvertently imply that only buildings can benefit, BIM offers a host of advantages when designing and building bridges as well.
