How to reduce cost and risk in capital projects

According to McKinsey, nine out of ten large infrastructure projects go over budget. In 73% of the cases, this is because of poor project execution. And what’s at the center of poor execution? Poor document management. In one study, three-quarters of respondents said that project document issues caused overruns on their projects, and 25% said that poor documentation had led to construction delays.

Digital twin created for groundbreaking bridge with Allplan Bridge

The Ottendorf Viaduct on the Riesa-Chemnitz railway line stood for over 160 years until it could no longer be saved and had to be replaced in 2015. The new replacement structure built at that time was a first for Deutsche Bahn: For the first time in its history, it built a bridge with a frame-stiffened arch structure. Although 3D models were used to some extent in the planning of the structure, the BIM method was not applied, so that no digital twin of the bridge is available for future (maintenance) work.

Evolving how strategic infrastructure projects secure planning approval in the UK

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has recently launched an operational review of the Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIP) regime. This regime, established in 2008, was put in place to bypass local planning approval for projects that had a predominately national rather than a local impact. Over the last few years, the regime has taken a significant battering with ‘development consent’ (the granting of planning approval) for major infrastructure programmes being brought before court due to the corresponding National Policy Statement (used to determine if a project is in line with government ambition) being out of date with latest government policy. The most notable example being a third runway at Heathrow. This highlights that something is wrong with turning strategic policy intent into decisions on granting development consent.
