3 IMPORTANT STEPS TO REVERSE ENGINEERING A PART

Article | April 8, 2021

Over the past 120 years, there has been a production of millions of machine parts and products worldwide. However, few of these products are still relevant over the years because of the technological advancement, but lots of old parts used in machines are still in use. When a part breaks down or malfunctions, it is usually replaced using a process known as reverse engineering. There are many things that can be learned from a machine or software, just from reverse engineering. This is because the concept behind the reverse engineering process is to break something down to help understand it, and the engineer can then build a copy or try to improve it. Furthermore, there is a need for a reverse engineering design process as the technology advances to ensure the existing manufacturing systems’ continuity. Reverse engineering is an important process for everybody as we will be forced to replace entire machines without it. In this article, we will break down everything you need to know about reverse engineering, from reverse engineering to reverse engineering processes.

The latest on ICE's second UK infrastructure assessment consultation

Article | August 17, 2021

ICE Policy and Public Affairs recently launched a discussion paper and consultation on what should be in the second National Infrastructure Assessment (NIA). The work progresses the institution’s aims to influence infrastructure policy at a systems level. This autumn, the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) will publish its baseline assessment of the current state of key infrastructure sectors, along with proposals for the strategic themes and main priorities of the second NIA expected in 2023. Having been closely involved in both the establishment of the NIC in 2013 and the first NIA in 2018, our consultation asks what the core considerations of NIA2 should be – including net-zero, levelling-up and climate resilience – and explores which demand drivers have changed since the first NIA. Through this paper, we’re seeking to shape the wider infrastructure policy debate, consistently and over a number of years, by examining what our long-term infrastructure should look like – and most importantly, ensure it delivers the sustainable future outcomes we need it to. Look out for more updates later this year on ICE’s work in this area.

Where Are You in Your Additive Manufacturing Automation Journey?

Article | May 12, 2021

Somewhat ironically, many processes in additive manufacturing – which is often defined as a digital manufacturing technology – remain manual and siloed. Automation is still not widely deployed in additive manufacturing. The vast majority of companies adopting 3D printing remain dependent on human labour and access to physical inventories. Below we’ll be exploring the stages of maturity in additive manufacturing IT automation; areas companies should consider automating and software solutions available to help you digitise and streamline your additive manufacturing operations.
