The Strategic Road Network (SRN) is the backbone of the road network in England. The UK’s road network is a fundamental part of our transport system; all journeys start on a road or pavement of some form.
The functioning of the SRN is critical for the economy. Entire sectors depend on it, with some of the most dependent including retail, primary materials, manufacturing and construction. Thirty percent of all traffic is carried by the SRN road; inefficiencies, in the form of congestion, negatively affect productivity, the environment and quality of life.

Green and sustainable – these have become the main objectives of most construction projects being made today. And why not when they offer a lot of benefits not just to the environment but to the building owner and occupants too. When we hear of sustainability, the first context that comes to mind is that of the environment. But since the EIA U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that almost 50% of CO2 is emitted by buildings, it’s about time sustainability is spoken widely also in the context of architecture.

For those of us who have worked in the construction industry for many years, it is time we face up to an ugly reality... Our industry has always had a love affair with silos. Silos are endemic in the construction industry. The silos I’m referencing don’t hold grain. Instead, they represent the multiple subgroups assembled to complete a project. Most of us know this is not a good thing and deep down, we wish it wasn’t true. But, the ugly reality of our business is this - construction breeds and nurtures silos.
