While the most visible aspect of engineering at ADOT is building, maintaining and operating state highways, there’s a lot of prep work that goes into projects. One area of ADOT that does a lot of preparation work to help keep important highway projects moving on schedule is the Utility and Railroad Engineering section. The Utility and Railroad Engineering’s mission is supporting ADOT’s construction program by making sure utilities don't conflict with the design of a project before it goes to construction.
With major demographic challenges on the horizon – including the growth and ageing of the population, coupled with the need to adapt to a changing climate – it is essential that we take a long-term approach to infrastructure planning. The National Infrastructure Commission’s (NIC) National Infrastructure Assessment (NIA) aims to do exactly that.
Producing the NIA every five years is one of the NIC’s core responsibilities set out in its charter and its first such report, published in 2018, heavily influenced the government’s recent National Infrastructure Strategy.
Across the business landscape, we’re seeing a wholesale movement of services to the Cloud as companies wake up to the benefits of capacity and flexibility that accompany such a shift away from hosting systems on servers. While there are clear advantages to migrating to the cloud, there are challenges too – such as layers of added complexity. Testing these cloud-based systems to make sure they stand up under duress is important, but the heightened complexity of these environments means that the role of Quality Assurance has had to evolve accordingly.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is revolutionizing the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry worldwide. For many public sector and major projects, BIM has become the required method of working. Yet, despite the increasing acceptance and use of BIM, there are still some barriers to its adoption.
