Progress in many domains increasingly benefits from our ability to view the systems through a computational lens, i.e., using computational abstractions of the domains; and our ability to acquire, share, integrate, and analyze disparate types of data. These advances would not be possible without the advanced data and computational cyberinfrastructure and tools for data capture, integration, analysis, modeling, and simulation.

The Efficiency of BIM for Bridges

Article | July 14, 2021

When the Tamina Bridge in the Swiss Alps was first proposed, the engineers were uncertain how they would create a bridge that spanned two different heights at each end of the valley, at a height of 220m (772 feet) above ground. Yet despite these challenges, the bridge was completed a year ahead of schedule in just four years – mainly due to the efficiencies that Building Information Modelling (BIM) provided. While the name may inadvertently imply that only buildings can benefit, BIM offers a host of advantages when designing and building bridges as well.

The city’s leadership hosted a Community Chat with Mayor Eric Niemann tonight through videoconferencing. Besides the mayor, City Manager Chris Workman was also on hand to answer any questions. At a point in the meeting when Niemann and Workman were taking questions, I threw out a couple of questions, including the status of local developments in town.
