15 sites in the frame to become home to the UK’s prototype fusion energy plant

Article | May 15, 2021

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has revealed the long list of sites under consideration for development of the UK’s prototype fusion energy plant. An open call for sites to host the Spherical Tokomak for Energy Production (Step) facility was opened last year and compliance check of those nominated has led to publication of the long list. According to the UKAEA, moving fusion from research and development to design and delivery is an important part of the UK’s ambition to be a world leader in sustainable, low-carbon energy. Fusion has the potential to provide an abundant source of low-carbon energy by copying the processes that power the sun and stars. UKAEA has said that this new technology will play an important role alongside established renewable technologies such as wind and solar.Step programme director Paul Methven said: “STEP is about building on the amazing science done over decades in fusion and translating that into a real prototype power plant that paves the way for this fantastic new energy source.

The Hidden Savings of Engineering Value

Article | May 15, 2021

The so-called bottom line is an unavoidable, monolithic reality of the construction industry, and it is something we’ve seen happening with some of our window shade competitors. However, a formulaic race to the bottom can have dramatically negative effects on the true cost of a solar control project. General contractors starting out a project with a pre-formulated spreadsheet is a common mistake.

6 Ways to Boost Occupational Health in Construction

Article | May 15, 2021

Creating homes and structures from scratch is a rewarding career path for many. However, working in construction has unique risks and stressors. Exposure to harmful chemicals, constant loud noise, handling heavy loads, and potential hazards such as falling from a high place or electric shocks are among the daily risks for millions who work on construction sites. Hence, construction is the sector with one of the highest rates of fatal workplace accidents, according to the International Labor Organization. The organization estimates that 2.3 million workers around the world lose their lives to work-related accidents and illnesses every year.

Transforming the Building Industry with the use of Immersive Technology

Article | May 15, 2021

The building industry is a trillion dollar global market, which has typically comprised fragmented workflows and a general aversion to tech-based disruption. While some of these hurdles have been crossed in recent years – within the design niche, this specifically entails the use of BIM data and increasingly sophisticated 3D visualization tools – there are still avenues unexplored that stand to dramatically transform the way we build.
